Biosafety

The Biosafety Program (BSP) collaborates with MIT Principal Investigators (PIs) to ensure the safe and responsible conduct of life sciences research. Biosafety staff members participate in and support the MIT Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Committee on Animal Care (IACUC) and Committee on the Use of Humans as Experimental Subjects (IRB).

We assist PIs in registering their biological research for review and approval by the MIT IBC called the Committee on Assessment of Biohazards and Embryonic Stem Research Oversight, in developing safe laboratory and animal research procedures and protocols, and in obtaining regulatory approvals.  The Biosafety Program conducts animal research biosafety risk assessments and develops appropriate containment measures for work with biohazardous materials in animals.  Where research may involve the use of human materials or samples, the Biosafety Program works with investigators to ensure compliance with all needed MIT IRB policies.

Our objective is to facilitate life sciences research while ensuring safety and compliance.
